Subject: Barna GAA Notes March 30th 04

Barna GAA Football club, launched their new season in Division A Football
with an away fixture to fellow Connamara club and more recently arch rivals
, namely Killanin. When these two clubs meet the competition for victory
between them, is now tense and a large crowd turned up at Killanin last
Sunday to witness their latest encounter. Killanin, without the services of
Galway players Kevin Walsh and Ritchie Fahy, both injured, Barna ,were
quietly confident that this might be their day for a victory. Barna fielded
a strong team and to be perfectly honest flung everything at the Killanin
goalmouth in the first half, but with little success on the scoreboard, as
they tried for goals. In the first half they missed three sitters, with
nobody to beat each time but a very fortunate Killanin Keeper.
It took Killanin sixteen minutes to score. So the tally at half time should
have read that Barna were eight points in front and coasting, but this was
not so with a very lucky Killanin Team going into the dressingroom one point
up. It was hard to believe, as Barna had 75% of possession, pounded the
Killanin defence in the first half but only succeeded in scoring three
points from frees, DD Flaherty ( 2 ) and Peadair Friel (1 ). All of the
Killanin scores also came from frees.
In the second half championship fever arrived in Killanin, as Barna again
layed siege to the Killanin goalmoth and eventually took the lead with one
minute of extra time played, with a very brave point from play from a now
limping, Peadair Friel. However victory was not to be and, in the last
seconds, the referee called for a free to Killanin for a foul that was
certainly greeted as very questionable indeed, by the large Barna
following. That free kick, sailed over the bar, to sent the Barna players
marching of the pitch speechless and extremely disappointed that the
victory, this writer for one, deemed. they deserved , but was not to be
theirs , once more. So Barna will have to wait for another day to conquer
Killanin. The other second half Barna scores were from Brian Conneely, Donal
Feeney (2) and Davy Carr.
The Barna Team, who in all fairness ,all played well, except for some poor
passing and general distribution of the ball, was as follows , Marty
Mannion, Mattie Gannon, John Clifford, John Gannon, Franny Gannon, Ronan
Rogers, Enda Conneely ( Capt ), Davy Carr, Brian Conneely, Enda Flaherty (
Thomas Nally, half time )Tony Barret, Donal Feeney, DD Flaherty, Eoin
McDonagh and Peadair Friel.
The Club welcome back County Under 21 Player 02/03 Brian Conneely after a
long absence. Brian who played Centrefield last Sunday has certainly
improved with the long rest, catching some fine balls in the middle of the
field.
On Saturday evening, in a game played during the Treble Crown Rugby game,
which I found remarkable, a very much understrength and young Barna Junior A
team beat Kinvara decisively by 1-15 to 1-5 at Barna Pitch. Best for Barna
was Ger Butler, making a successful return to the Barna jersey after
spending 2003, helping out his old club Shrule, Co Mayo. Also to shine was
Gus Flaherty and Minors from last year, John Murphy ( Goalkeeper ) Aidan
O’Connor, Ritchie O’Carroll and, Aoiffann Grehan.
The Ladies got of to a disappointing start to the season on Sunday last
losing to big rivals, from last year, Rosmuc side, Na Pairsing, who lost the
county final in their group in 2003, to Miltown. The final score was Na
Pairsaig 5-7 to Barna’s 4-6.
The Club would also welcome back to training, the former Mayo player star
Pat Fallon. Pat took a years absence from Barna, where he now resides to
assist his home club of Balla Co Mayo keen promotion. I cannot say if Pat
will play senior or Junior A at this time, but either way it will be a
pleasure to have Pat back in the Barna colours, where he and the already
returned Ger Butler ( to Junior A ), together with Tony Barret ( to Seniors
), have always made a fine comtribution as clubmen, both on the field of
play and, in the dressing room.

from the Clubs Canadian trip and the our Annual Banquet, held recently t the
Galway Bay hotel in Salthill.
The Club Lotto drawn at Killorans Pub in Salthill on Saturday night produced
no Match four winner, when Nos 3,7,12,17 were pulled from the Drum. However
Four Match three Winners were pulled. The Jackpot is now at 2,550 euro and
,this weeks draw, will be drawn at the Twelve Pins on Saturday night next.
Last Saturday , the Club sent a small team to compete in the Senior Scor
County Final in Moylough. This was the clubs first return to these
competitions for many years. May I wish the Galway Scor Winners who
nominated champions, by the judges, on Saturday night last the ,best of luck
from Barna as they head on the long trip to the Leitrim/Cavan border to the
town of Ballinamore, to compete in the Connaught Finals.
The Club, also urges all Club members to submit their fees , which is still
at the low figure of 25 euro for this year, immediately.
Lastly the Club , have entered a Team for the big GAA Quiz night at the
Galway Radisson Hotel on Tuesday next April 6th. This is a major event
hosted by Ollie Turner of Galway Bay FM in aid of the West of Ireland
Alzheimers Foundation.
