The Barna U16 secured the City and County A League title when they beat Corofin in the final last Wednesday. This was a great display by the lads and they will need to keep this good form as they prepare for the championship.
Well done to all the players on the panel and the management team of Cosmos Gilmore, Eddie Walsh and Aidan Brady.
A special word of thanks to all those whom attended Pearce Stadium to give the lads they support. It was great to have so many there to cheer the lads on.

Killanin: 1-08 Barna: 0-12 Pearce Stadium Sun, 14 June 2009
Barna did just enough to see off the challenge of Killanin in their Champions Qualifier on Sunday afternoon. Barna were desperately hoping to put the disappointing defeat to Moycullen behind them. Killanin and Barna had already met this season in the Sweeney Oil League, however, the championship clash was going to be different situation altogether.
Killanin got off to the better start, or should that be, Barna got off to a poor start. Either way, Killanin racked up a lead of 4 points mid way through the first half when they found the back of the net. The Killanin goal looked like being the difference in the two teams, however, Barna were beginning to get into their stride. Barna had had a goal opportunity a few minutes earlier when Brian Conneely put the ball wide after great work to create a goal opportunity for himself.
Claregalway Hotel Senior Football Championship Moycullen: 2-10 Barna: 1-08 Pearse Stadium
The Barna Seniors suffered a most disappointing defeat in the first round of the County Championship in Pearse Stadium on Sunday. On the back of some great performances in the league, the team unfortunately took too long to get going and two goals for Moycullen in the first half was always going to be a lot to make up.
Barna did manage to get a goal back before the end of the first half but Moycullen continued to pop over some crucial points, leaving the halftime score at Moycullen 2-06 to Barna’s 1-02.
The half time break will have been a welcome cooling off period for the players who had to play in extremely hot conditions as Salthill enjoyed the hottest day of the year. The break did allow the Barna team the chance to regroup and set about making up the seven point deficit.
Barna’s second half performance was somewhat better but Moycullen to their credit were ready to maintain their lead. Barna did have a couple of goal opportunities, not sitters by any stretch of the imagination but opportunities that may have found their way into the goal on another day.
In the end, the score finished up Moycullen 2-10, Barna 1-8.
BARNA V MOYCULLEN Senior Football Championship Sun, 31 May at 3:30pm Pearse Stadium Salthill
The Barna Seniors take on Moycullen in the first round of the County Championship this weekend. The game is taking place on Sunday, 31 May, at Pearse Stadium.
The Barna senior team have been progressing very well over the past few months and have shown good league form. On their last outing, the team put in a strong performance against Corofin and if they pull of a similar performance in Salthill next Sunday, they should be able to overcome the challenge from their neighbours Moycullen.
The Championship Weekend is part of a massive weekend in Galway. The club really need the support of all members and the game promises to be the best entertainment available over the weekend. Parking in the Salthill area will no doubt be a nightmare on Sunday so allow enough time to get to the game on time.
The Barna Seniors secured another impressive victory on Saturday with a win over County Champions, Corofin. The challenge of facing Corofin in their home venue would have seemed to neutrals as “a lot to ask” from the recently promoted Barna team. However, from the throw in, Barna set out to beat their appoints by playing a fast moving and pressing style of football, a style that made for highly enjoyable viewing for those on the side line.
The opening score came from Ray Conneely who went on to put in a highly impressive performance for Barna. The vital goal game from a well worked high ball into Brian Conneely at full forward. The move was text book – high fielding, shove off defender, turn to face goal and hammer the ball past the keeper. From the moment the goal went in, which happened in about the tenth minute, the Barna backs knew they would have to pull out all the stops to keep the 3 point difference for the remainder of the half and indeed until the final whistle. The Barna defence was awesome in its approach to halting the highly regarded Corofin attack. The Corofin attack were reduced to over passing as a result of the pressure and harassing from the Barna defence – the over passing eventually being cut out by the Barna defence. And each time the Corofin attack broke down, the ball started to move up the pitch with purpose and momentum. It was an impressive ensemble display by the team and panel.
